Storage

Beta

Storage choices depend on the installed release, hosting provider, location and plan. Use only the disk and volume actions offered for your VPS. Ask your provider about unavailable options before making changes inside the guest.

Storage Tiers

Choose from the tiers shown with your plan, such as SSD or NVMe when offered. Check the included capacity and any stated performance limits. Do not assume an existing disk can be moved between tiers.

Root Disk

The root disk contains the operating system and may also contain your application data. Choose enough space for the image, updates and expected data growth. Disk shrinking is not supported. Keep a separate, tested backup before resizing, reinstalling or deleting storage.

Disk Resize

If disk growth is supported and enabled for your plan:

  1. Back up important data and check the provider's requirements for shutdown or restart.
  2. Request the larger size using the control offered in the panel.
  3. Wait for the result before making another storage change.
  4. Check whether the guest sees the larger disk.
  5. Expand the partition or logical volume if needed, then expand the filesystem using your operating system's instructions.
  6. Verify the usable filesystem size and check your applications.

Guest filesystem

A larger disk in the panel does not necessarily mean a larger filesystem inside the VPS. The required steps depend on the image, partition layout and filesystem. Do not format an existing disk to make the extra space available.

On Linux, these read-only commands help identify disks, filesystems and current usage:

bash
lsblk -o NAME,SIZE,FSTYPE,UUID,MOUNTPOINTS
df -hT

If you cannot identify the correct disk or filesystem, stop and ask your provider for guidance.

Additional Volumes

Use additional-volume controls only if your release, provider and plan enable them. After attaching a volume, identify it inside the guest by checking its size and existing filesystem. Do not assume a particular device name or that the volume is empty.

For a confirmed new, empty disk, create a partition and filesystem following your operating system's guide. For a disk that already contains data, mount the existing filesystem instead of formatting it. Verify the mount before configuring persistent mounting, preferably using its filesystem UUID. Check that applications use the intended mount point.

Volume Safety

Stop applications using a volume and unmount it before detaching it. Check the volume identity and backups before deletion; treat deletion as permanent. An attached volume is not a backup of the data stored on it.

For full disks or failed operations, see Troubleshooting. Contact your hosting provider with the affected instance, requested size and redacted error text.
