Advanced Networking

Beta

Use these instructions only for options implemented in your installed release and enabled by your provider for your plan and location. This page is not a guarantee that an option is available. If a control is absent, ask your hosting provider rather than attempting to enable it yourself.

IPv6

If IPv6 is offered, use only the address or prefix assigned to your VPS. Apply the provider's gateway and prefix settings for the selected operating system. Check IPv6 connectivity and firewall rules before publishing an IPv6 DNS record. Working IPv4 access does not confirm that IPv6 is configured correctly.

Network Settings

Follow your provider's guest configuration instructions for the network offered with the plan. Do not replace an assigned prefix or gateway with values from a generic guide. Keep a record of the working settings and confirm a recovery method before changing them.

Port Forwarding

If your provider offers a NAT plan, connect using its supplied public address and public port. The public port can differ from the service's port inside the VPS. For example, SSH may require a custom port; see SSH Access.

If port-forwarding controls are enabled, confirm the protocol and destination port before applying a change. Expose only services you intend to make public, and check the guest firewall as well. Do not assume every port is available or that a private address is reachable from the internet.

Private Networks

Use private-network controls only when offered for your account. Confirm which of your instances should participate before making a change. A private address is not a substitute for authentication, encryption or firewall rules. See Tenant Isolation for access precautions.

Floating IPs

If floating-address management is enabled, check the eligible destination instances shown by the provider. Prepare and test the service on the destination before moving traffic. Allow for connection interruption and verify the result after the change. Do not assume a move transfers application data or configures the destination service.

Reverse DNS

If reverse DNS is supported, use the provided control or ask your hosting provider to update the PTR record. Use a hostname you control and check that its forward DNS points to the intended address. Changing reverse DNS does not create the corresponding forward DNS record.

Firewall

Use panel firewall controls only if enabled for your VPS. Allow the required service ports and restrict management access to trusted source addresses where possible. Confirm that SSH and an available recovery method will remain accessible before tightening rules. Test changes without closing your existing working connection.

If reusable security groups are offered, review every affected instance before changing a shared rule. Panel rules do not replace the need to check the operating system's firewall and service settings.

Bandwidth and Port Speed

Check your hosting provider's plan details for transfer allowances and network speed limits. Use usage displays only when available in your release and service. Ask your provider how usage is measured and what happens at an allowance limit. Do not assume a displayed port speed guarantees that speed to every destination.

Getting Help

For connection checks, start with Networking and Troubleshooting. Contact your hosting provider for unavailable controls or plan-specific settings. Share relevant error text privately after removing credentials and unrelated account information.
