Networking

Beta

Use the network details supplied for your VPS by your hosting provider. Available address types and controls depend on the installed release, location, provider and plan. Do not assume that every option described in these docs is enabled for your service.

Connection Details

Check the instance's network and connection information for:

  • The assigned address or public connection address.
  • The SSH port, which may differ from port 22.
  • The image's login username; see SSH Access.
  • The prefix, gateway and DNS settings, if guest configuration is required.

Use only addresses assigned to your VPS. Do not choose an unused-looking public address or copy settings from another instance.

Guest Network Settings

Use the provider's instructions for your operating system and location. An address, prefix or gateway copied from an unrelated guide can disconnect the VPS.

Before changing guest networking, record the working configuration. Confirm that you have a recovery method, such as an enabled console. If no recovery method is available, ask your hosting provider before making changes.

Additional IPv4

Request an additional address only if your release and provider offer the control and your plan permits it.

  1. Check your plan's address allowance.
  2. Use the additional-address option shown in the panel.
  3. Wait for the result and note the address actually assigned.
  4. Follow the provider's guest configuration instructions, if required.
  5. Verify connectivity before directing application traffic to the address.

If the option is missing or a request fails, contact your provider rather than assigning an address manually.

DNS Changes

Point public DNS records only to the connection address intended for your service. Use an IPv6 record only when IPv6 is enabled and working for that VPS. Remove or update old records when you stop using an address. Do not assume a released address will remain yours or can be recovered later.

Connection Problems

Check that the VPS is running and that you are using its current address and port. Confirm that the intended service is listening and allowed by the applicable firewall rules. Avoid disabling all firewall protection as a troubleshooting shortcut.

For optional networking controls, see Advanced Networking. For connection failures, see Troubleshooting. Ask your hosting provider to check missing or incorrect connection details. Share only relevant, redacted diagnostics through private support.
